Doretta M. Thomer
Age 96, of Marshfield, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013 at Gold Horizons Care Facility in Marshfield where she had resided since November 2011. She was under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield. The Rev. Eric Berns will officiate. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 4PM until 8PM at Life Tributes Funeral Home in Spencer (901 S. LaSalle St.) and again on Saturday at the church in Marshfield from 9:30AM until time of services. A Knights of Columbus Rosary Services will be held at 7:30PM followed by a parish prayer service both held at the funeral home on Friday evening. Acting as her pallbearers will be Bob, Michael, Kurt, Kevin and Kory Thomer and Jordan Weinfurtner. Doretta's honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters: Janalee Laundrie, Darla Weinfurtner and Kathy Fritsch.
Doretta was born April 20, 1916 in Wood County, daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Diers) Wartner. She attended both Golden Glow Country School in the Town of Rock, St. Mary’s Parochial School in Bakerville and St. John’s High School.
On June 24, 1937 Doretta married Robert Thomer at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Bakerville. Together they farmed until her husband’s death on January 19, 1964. She was later employed by Saint Joseph’s Hospital and worked in both dietary and x-ray departments until her retirement in 1981.
Doretta and her sisters took bus trips to several places in the United States and even traveled together to Rome, Italy, Barbados and West Indies.
Her hobbies included working in her garden and beautiful flower beds, crocheting, reading, playing piano and spending time solving crossword puzzles and word searches. Her children and grandchildren remember sharing time and making memories while picking raspberries and strawberries for jelly and pies. She helped out with many dinners at Our Lady of Peace and in the OLP food stand at The Central Wisconsin Sate Fair in Marshfield.
Doretta was a charter member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, a member of the PCCW and former leader with Riverview 4-H.
Survivors include two sons: Richard (Joyce) Thomer of Marshfield and William (Irene) Thomer of Mosinee; ten grandchildren: Darla (Mark) Weinfurtner of Eau Claire; Bob (Jen) Thomer of Omro; Michael (Lynn) Thomer of Menasha; Janalee (Ben) Laundrie of Menasha; Kathy (Ash) Fritsch of Marshfield; Kurt (Ashley) Thomer of Edgar; Kevin Thomer of Mosinee; Kory (Sara) Thomer of Mosinee; David (Theresa) Doty of Lodi and Rick (Laura) Doty of Eau Claire; twelve great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; one step great great grandson, an aunt Ceil Diers of Poniatowski, a special cousin Laura (Jerry) Niehaus of Stratford along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Robert in infancy, one brother Lawrence and three sisters: Sister Colette, Sister Clare and Sister Josepha.
