Bill and I were classmates at Cedar Heights Elementary, Peet Junior High, and CFHS and graduated also in the Class of '69. He and I and Rick Harned would go sledding in the winter at Hartman Reserve. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I heard about it from another classmate as we were discussing who would be at our 50th reunion this year.Bill was a great friend and a very bright person. When I am in Cedar Falls this summer, I plan to sit on his bench.

Early in 2017 Bill came to the North Wood County Historical Society for a tour of the William H. Upham House and then expressed interest in helping out in some way. When I showed him the various archival projects that needed attention, he initially was not sure – but he’d give it a shot. He spent a lot of time cataloging various artifact and archival collections and after completing each one Bill would say, “Well, if there is anything else I could work on, let me know”. There was plenty to do! I was happy for his willingness and his enjoyment of each project.
One of the bigger, more complex, and yet to be figured out collections pertained to the 1950s Rollohome Trailer Coach Company which had been waiting in the archives and needed to be really gone over. Bill spent 48 volunteer hours sorting through, making sense of, and cataloging this collection comprised of photographs, scrapbooks, and letters. By the project’s end, he knew so much about it he wrote an article for our 2017 Fall Newsletter.
I always looked forward to Bill’s time here, not merely for the help, but also because I saw he was enjoying himself and felt like he was making a difference. He was kind, generous, intelligent, and willing to lend a hand. In the two years he was with us, Bill invested 200 volunteer hours to the NWCHS and received a Volunteer of the Year award in 2017.
Even when he felt unable to attend to the details of the work, Bill would stop by for a visit, which always brightened my day. Thank you, Bill. We will miss you!

I’m so terribly sorry for your loss. I can only imagine how you must feel. I have personally found comfort in scriptures like Job 14:14,15 which remind me that God cares so deeply for us that he yearns for the day when he will bring us back to life (John 5:28, 29). I hope that these words bring you comfort as well. If you wish, you may contact me to learn about the resurrection hope found in The Bible.

Bill was a complete stranger to me two years ago, and as short of a time as it was I am proud to call him a friend of ours. He came into our lives as a volunteer at the North Wood County Historical Society and served diligently as much as he could. He undertook the detailed work others were prone to avoid and did so with a smile. He had an ever growing fascination of our community as he learned more through his time there and he was always curious, always helpful and always courteous.
From all of us at NWCHS and our families we wish to give our deepest sympathy to his family and friends and to say he will be sorely missed.
Regards,
Brad Allen
President- NWCHS

I got to know Bill thru our church, St Paul’s United Church of Christ. He was such s thoughtful guy, soft spoken and with a very rye sense of humor. He often made me laugh. He enjoyed helping at Hope Lodge with church members. He said he couldn’t cook or bake anything to bring there but he said he was a mean dishwasher. HE WAS!! Also spend lots of time visiting with those who were staying there. Just a all around pleasant guy.....

Bill was a good friend, very well-read, and he enjoyed sharing his worldly experiences during our many conversations. He served on the Board of Directors of the Literacy Council, where he also tutored a handful of adults in reading and math. He also volunteered for the Historical Society, and served on his Church Choir, and on their Board.
When he shared the news of his cancer diagnosis nearly a year ago, it was a shock for both of us but he accepted the news as fate. He spent the next several months preparing for others what he'd need to do. That was Bill.....prepared to provide ease and comfort for others.
Bill seemed to be in excellent shape; he exercised daily at the YMCA and walking in his neighborhood. He also ate a healthy diet. We enjoyed numerous meals at favorite restaurants, or at his house. We both enjoyed the spice of life!
During his 4 years in the Navy, Bill served as a pharmacy technician. Following the Navy, he completed a BA in Social Work, but returned to school to get another degree in engineering due to a lack of jobs in social work. In his engineering work, he traveled all over the world, including Asia, Eastern Europe and South America, as well as throughout most of the United States. If he went to a country where he didn't know the language, he'd spend the time deciphering and explaining better directions to the people who would be using the machines.
Bill's living room was filled with magazines and news from around the world. He had a tremendous vocabulary, and a penchant for learning more. Ironically he'd challenge many of my entries in a game of Scrabble.
Bill had a quiet way about himself as well as a wonderful witty sense of humor. Even though he requested no service be held, anyone could honor Bill by being nice to someone else tomorrow. Just saying hello, smiling or holding a door for someone would be something Bill would do.
