When I was 10 years old, I had a brain tumor that had to be removed. Dr. Vanderspek was the lead surgeon on my case and I am forever grateful for him. Now I am 34 and thanks to him, have lead a very healthy life ever since. My condolences to friends and family of his passing. Thank you so much Dr. Vanderspek, you were a great surgeon who saved my life.

Dearest Marlene and family,
As we drove from the memorial service yesterday, I was pondering things I had not known about Hans. His early years were filled with heartache and challenges and he processed them much differently than most. That process became a transformation of love for him. In his latter years, everyone who met him walked away knowing they met a man who embodied love, gentleness, and humility. As one pastor said, you could see it, feel it, and experience what Hans embodied. From my perspective Hans personified 1 Corinthians 13. Yes I received that love in abundance from Hans, but it was a wonderful experience to give it back and be see the tears of love flow from the both of us. I grieved but celebrated when we heard he graduated into his new heavenly assignment. There was sense of loss knowing I would not see the love radiating from his eyes, to feel it in the strength of his embrace or in the tone of his voice. There was an even greater sense of awe that I had the opportunity to have experienced it at all. We are so very grateful we had the opportunity to know Hans. To play with him and to exchange the love of God with him. Now that he is no longer among us, but he is so very alive in our hearts. I ask God do it again. We have experienced that kind of love through Hans. God please let a Hans type of love, kindness and humility emit from all who experienced his kind of fatherly love. The world is in desperate need of this type of love flowing from us to them, and I am confident, Christ in us can do that very thing. Marlene, thank you for sharing Hans with us.
All our love,
Michel and Susan

To Marlene and family, our sincere condolences to you all. Hans was an exceptional friend and like a second father to me. We spent quite a few discussions about life, God, and everything else under the sun. Hans and I were roommates at a Mens Prayer Conference in Minneapolis several years ago, and it was a time I shall always deeply cherish! He will truly be missed, but our loss is Heavens gain.
Love you buddy, some day we shall meet again!

Dear Marlene and family.
We are truly deeply sorry for your loss.
I can not forget Hans' joyfully laughter as he shared the colorful stories of his life's experiences. He always had some practical wisdom to apply and enlightening conversation to add whenever we gathered together in small group or men's gatherings for church.
He was very much an enjoyable and gentle man to be around.
Sincerely,
Robert Van de Loo and family

My condolences go out to Marlene and the Vanderspek family. He operated on my mother's back when she was late in life and having a lot of pain. Postop she was free of pain. He was one of the Clinic old-timers, great surgeon but sensible and realistic. We will miss his friendly demeanor at the annual Doctor Dolittle Retreat.

Dear Marlene and Family,
I am so sad on learning on Han’s passing December 5, 2019. I will always remember the unforgettable memories, we shared as a neurosurgeon to physician assistant in neurosurgery for 15 years. I am so grateful that I was introduced to this fantastic neurosurgeon by his first assistant Mr. Bob Alderich, to join the Marshfield Clinic department of neurosurgery in 1985. Han’s always had the excellent communication to patients undergoing major neurosurgical surgery which he educated me, the understanding of life’s trials in those needing emergency and neurosurgical care.
When I talk of him, in my memories, I am not sadden, but have many of his mentorship thoughts of my personal challenges, which made me an improved Physician Surgical Assistant and family man.
The enjoyment of his life travels of where he was born, and the high school and college graduation diplomas leading on to being a Green Beret of the Netherlands during the floods of Holland, his personal life, and neurosurgical profession at the Rockford Hospital we reviewed sometimes daily, led me to believe he has been a man of honorable respect.
Good buy my friend, and confidant.
Respectfully,
Thomas Ptak

Oh Captain my Captain.....
My relationship with Hans began in Rockford Illinois, when I was just done with military service. Having been a corpsman, I worked as an orderly at a hospital where he worked. He wrote me a recommendation letter as I applied to P.A. programs. Little did he know, that a short time later, we would begin a 25 year career together at Marshfield. He was my "boss", mentor, colleague, and dear friend. I will miss our birthday calls to each other...his to me, opening with his harmonica rendition of the birthday song.
Smooth sailing my captain, until we meet in another port. Bob

Dear Marlene, On behalf of Wendy and myself, heartfelt condolences at the passing of Hans. Having only found out that he was in the hospital, the last week of his life, but not being aware of prior ongoing illness, it was a shock to learn of is death, in what seemed to be a very short time, though that apparently was not so.
No matter, we have lost a genuinely fine man and respected colleague of many years.
The good he did for so many over the years of his practice, and what he brought to Marshfield by way of skill and expertise are a legacy that will remain for years to come.
Wishing you and all his family peace and comfort in this time of loss.
Respectfully,
Dr. Dick and Wendy Dart
